How To Clean Jewelry At Home

Posted by Hyde Park Jewelers on 14th Nov 2022

Whether your jewelry is starting to look a little dull or you just want to give it a good deep clean, cleaning your jewelry at home is a great way to save time and money. Before you break out the harsh chemicals, there are a few things you should know about how to clean jewelry safely and effectively. Continue reading to learn how you can easily clean your jewelry at home with just a few common household items.

How Often Should You Clean Your Jewelry?

It's generally recommended that you clean your jewelry once every two weeks to remove built-up dirt, oil, and soap residue. If you wear your jewelry daily or if you live in a particularly humid or dusty environment, you may need to clean your jewelry more frequently.

The best way to know for sure is to take a close look at your jewelry. If it looks dull or lackluster, then it's probably time for a cleaning.

What You'll Need

To clean your jewelry at home, you'll need a few supplies that you probably already have around the house:

  • A bowl or cup
  • Distilled water or cold water from the tap
  • A mild dishwashing soap
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush or a cotton ball
  • A soft cloth

Instructions

  1. Fill the bowl or cup with water. Add a drop or two of mild dishwashing soap and stir gently to combine.
  2. Dip your piece of jewelry into the soapy water and allow it to soak for 3-5 minutes.
  3. Gently brush the piece of jewelry with a toothbrush or cotton ball to remove any dirt or grime. Be sure to brush all nooks and crannies, like under gemstones in settings and tight spaces between links in bracelets and chains.
  4. Rinse the piece of jewelry under cold running water until all soap residue has been removed. Make sure the drain is completely covered with a drain plug in case you accidentally drop your jewelry. Provide an extra layer of protection from dropping jewelry with a bowl to catch the rinsing water.
  5. Pat the piece of jewelry dry with a soft cloth.
  6. Allow it to air dry completely before putting it away or wearing it again.
  7. If necessary, buff the piece of jewelry with a soft cloth to restore shine.

With just a few common household items, you can easily clean your jewelry at home. Just be sure to handle your pieces gently and always air dry them completely before storing them away again. Contact us if you have any questions or need guidance.
