In colors from the golden rays of the rising sun to the glowing embers of dusk, topaz is a gem of brilliance. Derived from the Sanskrit for fire, topaz aptly symbolized the sun gods of ancient cultures.
Although usually associated with yellow hues, topaz is a gem for all seasons. For spring's advent, yellow and green varieties add freshness. Zesty reds, oranges and brasses usher in summer's heat, followed by leafy bronzes and reddish-browns that enliven autumn's somberness. Icy blues reflect the serenity of winter and the deeper blue shades crackle its cool stillness.
Because it rarely occurs in naturally vivid colors, the most prized color of topaz is red. However, in the intense hues, "Imperial Topaz" - the sherries, cognacs, champagnes, peaches and pinks - command substantial values. The imperial title was applied after magnificent pink topazes adorned 18th and 19th century Russian Czarinas. The Braganza, a yellow 12 ounce cut topaz, is among the crown jewels of Portugal.
